Last night I was at choir practice...my OutLoud Womyn's Voices Tuesday night group. We had performed for Flood Relief in Minden on Saturday night and were feeling pretty pleased with ourselves. Our director suggested we learn new songs...madrigals with
parts and layers of notes...I felt resistance. Generally we love singing the old songs, the songs we know without the books, the songs that give us comfort. That's when I saw what was happening.
That deliberate stepping forth into the new brings up
the comfort of the old. We just don't have the neural pathways for new learnings, but we can still go there...through the discomfort...and carve them out. I recognize in myself now, in a way I didn't a few years ago, the resistance and the need to delibertaely
step beyond it. Bring on new music and new other things! I need to keep expanding, not shutting down and staying with the old and familiar!
